Buckland Mill

Dover, Kent, UK

Buckland House, as seen from inside the Mill grounds.

Buckland House

The house that we now call Buckland House is not the original, the original Buckland house stood near Buckland Bridge and can be seen in the background of the image below, this house was renamed "Buckland Bridge House" when the new "Buckland House" was built circa 1823.

Buckland House built for Thomas Horn (Buckland Paper Mill owner) circa 1823.

You may think that this was always the Mill Managers House before it was more latterly used as offices, research shows that many others have lived in the house.  A listing of those that I have found evidence of living in the house are shown below.

  • The house was built in 1823 for Thomas Horn the paper mill owner
  • 1838 (earliest found) - 1842 Ann Horne widow of Thomas Horn
  • 1844 (earliest found) -1849 - Major William Martin Esq
  • 1858 - Rear Admiral Morier RN
  • 1859 - 1862 Colonel Francis Farrant KLS
  • 1863 Mrs and the Misses Dochair (or Dechair?)
  • 1864 - M.C. Seton - Director of East Kent Flour Mill and Bakery Company Limited
  • 1865 (earliest found) - 1868  - Colonel Farrant
  • 1873 - 1879 (latest found) - Major Cockayne Frith
  • 1887 - 1900 - Alfred Leney - Brewer
  • 1906 - 1910 - Mr C.J Noble
  • 1913 - Miss mary Greaves Fielding Dies
  • 1913 - Mr H Hobday, Mr L Hobday
  • 1936 - 1947 first reference of Mr J.D. Gordon living at Buckland House (Accident of 11 year old Albert Gordon)
  • 1947 application for conversion to 3 self contained flat
  • 1948 Application to convert to two houses
  • I am unsure if either of these two appplications materialised into anything, however after this time Buckland House was used as offices for Buckland Paper Mill
